Rich dark tones of black berries and cassis on the nose. Mouth-filling sour cherry and sweet plum flavors follow trough on the palate. Juicy tannins and spicy oak tones also contribute to the wines character.

A medium-bodied red with well integrated wood and berry flavor having bright aromas of plums and mulberries follow by a juicy layer of ripe fruit on the palate: okay tones of cedar spiciness add a dab of complexity to this elegant wine.

ABOUT DOOLHOF

Doolhof’s valley – the valley of the labyrinth-offers varied and unique terrain given its diverse microclimates, weather patterns and soil. The soil compositions are highly rated and show great potential for viticulture of the highest quality.

The Doolhof wine estate lies northeast of Wellington nestled between mountains. The soils, predominantly Malmesbury shale; are fine, balanced and deeper than those outside the immediate area. The shale-containing soils lie on mud rock with clays evenly distributed. Roots reach four meters and beyond. Doolhof has excellent irrigation reserves, supplemented by low water retention and the absence of wetness in the soil. The unique topography has created many distinct and diverse microclimates. Being high in the valley, Doolhof experiences cooler winters and more moderate summers than much of the Wellington area.

Late sunrise in the valley of the labyrinth results in less direct sunlight. This gives the Doolhof grapes a longer ripening process enhancing the elegance of its wines. The sun/wind balance ensures disease is all but absent in the vineyards. Night harvesting and hand picking are the norm, and the mysterious Doolhof dew caressing the grapes gives them a certain final touch.
